“Hope in a Sideways Smile”

              The song starts off quietly,

               Happily, joyfully.

               Carried along by the characters

Who are contained in the large house.

              The tink of tiny footsteps,

              The knocking from the door,

              This is the rhythm

That sets the tempo to our song.

A trill of laughter fills the air.

Particles of peace and happiness go flying.

Then a few words are spoken,

              And the love crashes down,

Falling apart like pieces of a puzzle.

A great wave of silence comes,

We are playing a game of quiet mouse.

Suddenly there is weeping all around,

And the picture on the screen

              Turns black and white.

There must be a scratch on the CD,

              For the music is stuck.

              Then it starts again,

Lending us all a little hope.
