“Known the empty seat” to Robert Frost after reading “Acquainted with the night”

I have known the empty seat.

I have stayed in the back—and front of the room.

My mind dancing faster than my tapping feet.

I have felt my thoughts on blank papers loom.

I have stared at and out the window during class

My eyes scamper, and teachers assume.

I have felt the bell shatter my eye-glass

When next to me a question

Shines the hope for pass,

But not to understand or offer suggestion;

And in my hands an erudite fright,

A squabble list of sparing directions

Proclaimed my head neither unkempt nor neat.

I have known the empty seat.
