The Protector

November 3, 2015

The dog lays cuddled in the corner of the lit house

enjoying the warmth from the comforting fire.

Occasionally a hand reaches, scratching behind

the ear or patting down the fur. The love is palpable.

A thankful lick is granted, the happiness and

joy overwhelming.

Outside a noise develops, slow at first, annoying, then

more threatening, dangerous.

The ears perk, the heart quickens, and duty calls.

Powerful legs carry me to the door, and I chase away

the intruder, away from here.

There is always one who threatens the love,

always waiting for the opportunity to steal the joy,

but I won’t let them. I will protect.

I stand at the edge of happiness and howl.
