Hercules
My eyes open, I blink away sleep and roll over.
He hears me moving and like the natural tick of a clock
he jumps onto the bed.
With his cold wet nose, he greets me.
“Good Morning” “Good Morning” we say
as we welcome our day.
Coffee, cereal, pants and shoes.
Kibble, harness, leash and keys.
We run, pounding step after step we race.
The challenge and the rush drives us forward.
Heaving breathing, pounding chest and aching muscles.
We push onward as we close in on the gate.
Passing through the door he walks in and sits down.
He looks back at me expectantly and I remove his leash.
I grab my book and those blue eyes
give me that look.
I collapse into the couch and he nuzzles next to me.
He is dog.
He is my perfect day.
He is my fire.
He is my peace.
He is Hercules.
He is my best friend.
