Seeing Myself
November 28, 2016
I see an unfamiliar face.
A face I never like to see.
Hoping it didn’t notice,
I look away quickly,
A pang of regret hits my chest
as I meet the face’s eyes,
brown as mud,
earning disgusted sighs.
My eyes wish to see beauty
Not this beast that claims to be.
My body wishes to see this thing
The way other people see.
My heart wishes that I look in the mirror
and recognize the unfamiliar face
as one of beauty and transcendence.
One that gives me faith.
Once upon a time,
in a place that was still and silent,
lived a dazzling young lady
who was only ever quiet.
She let people step on her,
the way that people do.
They took advantage of her silence,
the way they tend to.
