His Eyes

November 2, 2017

The boy looked her in the eyes

And the answer to his question was yes

And the answer to her prayers was no

And then there were no more answers

And they twisted her tongue

until her screams sounded like a prayer

Until she turned up the music,

Turned it up so she couldn’t hear the screams

And it was her head that was screaming,

And they said from where they stood

it sounded like it was between her and her God

And she looked her God in the eyes

And saw nothing

And felt nothing

And she looked the boy in the eyes

And saw humanity

Saw evolution

Saw the cavemen

Saw fire and brimstone

Burned witches

Lynched men

Red scalps

Said yes

Said no

Said please

Said don’t

And she couldn’t find the humanity in it if she tried

Couldn’t find the God in it if she tried

And that was what she saw

Exactly that

Behind his eyes
