Final Push

Final Push

I will not let you

make me other

than myself

let me examine

my day

hold it up to the light

see where I’ve been

and where I must go

by dawn tomorrow?

Such short days

left to us both

each one must count

in earth dug and

pages inked upon

in this deep winter.

My words murmur

starlings in my sleep

disturb dreams

call me to the desk

I do not have in

a room of my own

not in existence

here at home.

I must move on

though it costs me dear

and you

much more.

I have a tryst to keep with

a voice I’ve yet to find.

Day breaks my will:

my pen is dry

my eyes red

I close my notebook

unpack my case

prepare to embrace

the dying light.
