Bitter Grapes
August 2, 2014
Once upon a time,
I treated your words like gospel,
Where you could do no wrong.
You had me at your heels,
And I followed you.
You and life were all that were,
And I was just the breeze that stayed
At your shoulder
Through our walks in the sun.
But then the rain came.
Sometimes the rain turned to hail
And hurt as it stoned us alive,
But I continued on,
Still the little breeze
That was slowly becoming
As cold as your shoulder with every further step.
But faithful to you I stayed
Until you turned and blew me away.
You disappeared,
And as a breath with no lungs,
I wandered lost,
Trying to find your lips again,
Reaching out
Even for that cold shoulder
That once had been warm arms.
My love now my pain,
You took a new breath,
Leaving the shards of ice from your heart
As my resting place.
As I died,
I dreamed of your lies,
Every one of them.
The lies became memories,
Memories turning to bitter grapes
That your demons fed to me every day,
All the sustenance I was afforded.
And as I weakened,
I cried out with the last of me,
Reached for you,
Who had turned your back on me.
You fed me more grapes from your mouth.
Did you get what you came for,
Spotted Feather?
Taking my life for your ink
And writing the fate of my heart
Upon your skin,
Like a trophy in script?
Well played,
My flown love,
Well played.
The foolish heart was mine.
A hundred and fifty nights
Have come and gone
Since last you declared check.
In agonizing wait I have lain
In this bed of frozen abandon,
Yet unallowed to shake my coil.
Be my checkmate,
cruel wine of snakes.
Only the dead smile now.
