from the heart of a work in progress

February 2, 2015

I am the kind of person

Who wakes up early or not at all

Who drinks tea with too much sugar and not enough milk

Who writes poetry in the morning

Who loves sleepy smiles beyond measure

I am the kind of person

Who adores gentle mornings almost as much as crackling ones

I am the kind of person

Who is useless after 10PM

Who falls asleep too much and not enough

Who doesn’t notice a caffeine buzz until it is far, far, far too late

Who is probably not as awake as she’s pretending and probably not as sleepy as she’d like

Who would rather be sleeping

I am the kind of person

Who doesn’t plan all-nighters

I am the kind of person

Who loves irrevocably

Who would tear the earth in two just to kiss someone goodbye

Who is loyal too long and too quickly

Who can’t make her heart let go

Who has mourned in the valley of the shadow of death and watched others pass out the other side

Who still can’t process their passing

I am the kind of person

Who makes loving self-destructive

I am the kind of person

Who’s the bitterest in the evenings

Who sees too much and says too little

Who wishes for words and finds them too late

Who is always left stuttering

Who makes Sarah Palin without a teleprompter look eloquent

Who feels too much and is bitter too early

Who is too damn old to be this goddamn young

I am the kind of person

Who these times conspire to screw

I am the kind of person

Who fears intermittently and heartstoppingly

Who is not ready (not ready, not ready) to be an adult (not now and not ever)

Who is painfully aware they’ll outlive their parents

Who is afraid of being alone in a world choking on its own overpopulation

Who really needs to lay off the metaphors

I am the kind of person

Who is a goddamn poet, and will do as they please

I am the kind of person

Who second-guesses themself

Who has second-guessed themself for a long, long time

Who has spent most of their life trying to spread-eagle and dissect the anatomy of all that we are

Who has failed, and is learning to accept that

Who is learning there aren’t always words

Who is learning to live life as a continuum and not as a series of segments

I am the kind of person

Who is very much a work in progress

I am the kind of person

Who believes that we all are
