Hurt

May 13, 2013
We try to fly under the radar We tell ourselves the same rhyme over and over, as if broken bones can compare to every name you called us We paint smiles over our frowns so we don't give you the satisfaction But we coaxed ourselves into believing the words you said were true That no one liked us, that we were alone We tried to empty ourselves so we would feel nothing- no love...no pain But you continued to topple us with your wall of insults The girl you called ugly, the girl you called fat She sat in the back of the class so she wasn't bombarded with the insults But when the bell rang, the hallway turned into her own personal battle ground and she found herself fighting you off day after day You put signs on her locker calling her the names that melted her heart inside of her chest So she ran away Running for her own sanity Because you never saw her for her, but for her looks And she never came back He had a personality made of antidepressants because of the cruelty He merely laughs at the term "Drug free" Drugs are his only sanity in a world where he is drowning in a sea of your harshness Feeling like he was the main act in a circus meant only for your entertainment He locked his door and traipsed on the tightrope to earn your acceptance He walked the rope for miles until you pushed him and he fell We waited to be next in the long line of us that took on the roles of clowns and carnies Worst of all FREAKS We wrote "HATE" on our arms and it bled through the bandages used to hold ourselves together We went to school each day waiting for your arsenal to fire and hit us over and over Refusing to cry, we felt like a broken record- repeating "stop", remaining broken In our dreams we break society's mirror We look into a better one and look closer than you ever attempted to We saw what was truly beautiful when you saw the horrid and the ugly She wasn't the new girl, she was one of you Until you found out she brought black eyes and bloodied lips for show and tell She tried to stand her ground and all you did was bury her beneath it She ignored you and showed that she was fine, but we- the ones who know what it's like We saw her bleeding from the inside out We tried to tell her we didn't abandon her, like old broken house We simply went to get supplies to repair it But she let the faded echo of the insults beat their way into her sanctuary She took your arsenal and fired on herself So are you finally happy? Are you glad your words did what they were intended to do? They did exactly just that They hurt
