Flashbacks

January 9, 2018

I sit on the grass
In front of the school,
Reading a book as the younger ones play
Hide-and-go-seek.

There is a flashback
Of watching sunsets
While talking with friends
A boy comes out to us,
and asks to play disc golf.
We say yes.

But the flashback changes,
And there is a bicycle,
Three adolescents playing charades,
Another pair mocking a duel.

Again, the flashback changes,
Crying, anger, loneliness.
The goodbyes,
The disappointment.
I wish for the flashback,
That says, "Hello."
