Jamie Dillingham

If you don't learn to write your own story, someone else will write it for you

16 poems·Since July 2014

My name is Jamie Dillingham, and I'm 19 years old. I am a graduate of A.C. Reynolds High School, I live in Asheville, North Carolina, and will be attending Warren Wilson College this fall. I search for words in everything, and hope that the ones I find will mean something to other people, and perhaps help them with their life. I am a Glossophile, a Logophile, Anthrophile, and practically a Pantophile. If you like something, let me know. I imagine what I would say to people if ever given the chance, I don't have to speak directly, and that is what's liberating about writing, it's therapeutic in that I can say whatever I feel. I wish more people heard me, but that's okay because still, I am heard. I tend to let the meanings of my work remain up to others. --Oh, and never judge a poem by its title.

Still Alive

July 25, 2014

Gone for now, but still alive
To keep the thoughts of many who've died.
I walk through many problems outside,
I just close my eyes and think 'I'm still alive.'

The years wear away at my flesh,
But I'm still alive as long I have my breath.
Lasting to all of those whom I know,
Even for the time when my body lies below.

I hold on to my life through each dreary day,
Though I feel my years burning away.
If I live through five score,
I know I'll endure, plagues and wars,

But if I live beyond these decades,

And cross through the generations,
I know I'll see the trials and triumphs of many nations.
I stick through though times I'll cry,
Yet it'll be unseen, and if it is I'll deny.

For I avoid a public eye.
Indeed I try
To keep the troubles away.
"Actions repeat themselves," I've heard people say.

Through decades people's thoughts and dreams continue to live,
And as long I breathe, and speak so will I;
Until all humanity has disappeared, our thoughts and dreams will never die.
