Ruins
Standing here atop the shattered stones,
I watch as the world breaks and burns before me,
wondering where I've been,
how it got to this point.
Yet something deep inside me watches
as the fire rages through the city,
destroying everything I knew and loved.
Is it better this way?
Oh, it is beautiful...
To see the slate cleansed,
the sins purged, replaced with new sins.
I am not alone in these ruins, but I walk alone,
searching for someone to walk beside me.
Others pick their way through the devastation,
Hoping to find one merciful scrap,
A shred of peace within the horror.
So as I stand here, looking out before me...
who else do I see, standing above all the rest,
searching through the ruins for someone,
someone like me.
