The Hidden

December 1, 2014

Internal and external should both show me

but sometimes I hide qualities that fill me up internally

the true me is hidden with this mask put on externally

I am living this fake popular life nervously

And my internal characteristics are locked up undeservedly

I am operating this lifestyle with a whole wad of absurdity

I cannot breathe out the carbon dioxide stuck inside of me

Panting under this mask for its suffocating my identity

Epilepsy is armored up fighting this mask that’s stuck on like glue

Trying to reveal the hidden battle that I’m actually going through

Still remember 8th grade when epilepsy made its first debut

Seizures caused tears to form under my mother’s eyes like dew

Had me waking up with this excruciating pain and searching for undo

Only I couldn’t take back this permanent undecided tattoo

Seizures left me dazed and confused

I’d be clueless as if I was induced

For a moment I thought it’d be best if I just withdrew

How could I be a smart accomplishing leader if I am an epileptic

I wanted to continue my life so I told myself I know what the next step is

I knew that from here on out I needed to be an actress

Act like I don’t have Mr. “stupid” controlling epilepsy

Act like I don’t let this powerful man get the best of me

Act like I don’t have feelings that he uses to test me

Act like I couldn’t get this mask off because the glue had no remedy

Soon I realized that acting wasn’t the job for me

Why cover up my life instead of live as I believe

I applied the glue’s remedy

called the truth, the mask then easily

fell right off pleasingly

my identity was revealed and it consisted of epilepsy

and I showed the role epilepsy played inside of me

how it actually helped me become the leader that I dreamed to be

because it taught me to keep running the race even if I had hardships that clung on to me

it taught me that the word no can mean nothing to me

how not to let epilepsy hinder me from being what I aspire to be

and now I, an aspired future neurologist to be

will help kids who entered a state of depression like me

So now I say I am a proud epileptic honestly

and I continue to walk up the mountain carrying epilepsy along with me

the hidden is hidden no more for I pledge to live my life truthfully!
