Inside the Box

February 16, 2018
A boy began to learn how to mime at age two His parents bought him a striped shirt Told him to go make money on the corner of 1st avenue and 65th street In front of the drug store The day I met him he was fourteen years old He stood on the corner of 32nd and 101st street In front of the church He was in an "invisible box" I offered him a sandwich He stepped out of his "box" Last week I went back to 100th and 101st street And I saw the boy He was sixteen years old then Still inside the "invisible box" I offered him a sandwich But I realized the box was real He finally mastered the art of miming.
