Dancing to Oppression

August 24, 2020

Media

and Sexism

like to dictate how I move

how I dress

how I speak

how I am.

Do I talk to much?

Will he get the wrong idea?

Are my shorts too short?

Do I need to wear lipstick today?

Trivial things

really

just passing thoughts

and yet

So Powerful.

Too Powerful.

I take solace in that

I am not alone.

But

there are so many

who are also forced

into this toxic way of life.

Why must it be this way?

Why can't I enjoy my life without eyes

surrounding and dissecting my every move?

If this is how it is

then I am angry.
I am furious.
I rage against your tyrrany

and shatter your stereotypes

then maybe

just maybe

you will start listening.

I will not be

pushed off

as another

teenage girl.

Because it's time.
It's time for revolution.
Our mothers and their mothers
have paved a path.

Now is the time

to follow it.

Dance down that path

with the breeze in your soul.

Trod heavily

if that's what suits you.

But whatever

you do,

Do it loud.
Do it proud.
