The Me Who You Can't See

October 9, 2014

Here I am, standing here.

Do you see me?

Yes.

But, do you see the real me?

No.

Who am I? You ask.

Why do I hide?

I hide because I am afraid.

I've hidden myself so deep I don't even know who I am.

Every time I try to dig myself out,

Everyone else pushes me in deeper.

I am human.  I am afraid.

I am afraid to be who I am.

I am afraid I won't be accepted.

Isn't that your fear, too?  To not be wanted: to not belong.

The person who I am doesn't matter, it's the person you see that does.

I want you to see this shy, quiet girl, this nobody.

Who I want to be is a whole different person.

I want to be the one that makes the difference, the one the world can see,

Not some nobody, not who I am pretending to be.

Each and every one of us is hiding someone,

Someone behind the mask that everyone sees.

I want to be this person, this me who you can't see,

But, I hope you can see, I am afraid.

I am afraid to be me because of you.
