To be a writer
I’ve always been asked,
“What do you want to do when you grow up?”
Now that has changed to,
“What do you want to do after you graduate?”
And to be honest,
The answer is practically
The same if not just more definite,
How should I know?
Though of course I say something
Far more practical and expected,
Actually giving a description of
Where I want to go even if
I’m only guessing.
In an ideal world though,
I would do
Almost exactly what I do now,
Write stories in every kind of manner:
Poetry, novels, news articles,
Interviews, and yes,
Even essays or academic papers,
Because nothing,
Nothing other exploring ideas
And transforming these images and thoughts
Into the most sublime of concrete –
Written word
Could ever bring me
A similar satisfaction
Than that of writing.
There, however,
Lies the dilemma,
Writing is never something
I learned or was
“Properly educated” on,
It was simply something I picked up,
Purely by chance as a matter of fact,
It has been more of an innate,
Natural “gift” more than anything else,
And over time,
It has become more
Intricate, balanced,
And honed.
And although that’s
Partially the problem,
It is also the solution:
Because it has never been about
What classes I need to take,
How many credits
I’m going to need for my major,
Or even my second major,
It’s not about
Who or what I’m going to have
To overcome,
It’s just about the experience,
Learning anything and everything I can
From every situation and applying it
As a student, an author, a reporter,
A poet, an editor, and of course,
A person.
It’s only ever about the journey,
Where I’ve come from
And where I’m going,
What I’ve written
And the next idea that
Takes its place,
It’s about seeing how, and what,
I change along the way.
