The Biggest Distraction

May 25, 2013
(poems go here) First Period- I’m busy running a T-test, Juggling sample means And standard deviations; But then- Vibrations Buzzing so hard against my leg; My phone asks, pleads, begs Demands That I check it. I know I shouldn’t. But come on… Just a look, A quick peek, You know, A really, really, really fast one I promise. It’s from my best friend: “OMG he asked me out! Yes!” Twenty exclamation marks, No less. They all ask, plead, beg, Demand That I text back. I know I shouldn’t. But come on… Just a text, A small one, You know, A really, really, really short one I promise. Last Period- I’m struggling Trying to bury my head into Jefferson and Madison and Monroe. I feel my phone again. Sitting nicely in my back pocket. My fingers itch- Four numbers And I could check my Facebook. My phone entices, cajoles, tempts, Seduces Me to use it. I know I shouldn’t. But come on, Just a look A quick peek, You know A really, really, really fast one. I promise. Homework- I can’t focus Not on those Crazy formulas on the page. My phone is jumping Up and down. It asks, pleads, begs Demands That I access it. I know I shouldn’t, But come on, I have plenty of time. You know Hours to finish my homework. Two hours later, My paper is blank. I have done nothing. Nothing but cave in To my cell phone’s No, To my own temptations. First period the next morning, I feel my phone in my back pocket. I pull it out, And press down hard, on the power button. The screen goes black. I have turned it off.
