If you don't learn to write your own story, someone else will write it for you

6 poems·Since July 2014

I am an 18 year old college student who who has always had a strong love for both music and poetry. I am a singer as well as a spoken word poet. I currently reside in New York City more specifically in Brooklyn. I have performed some of my poetry at places such as The Nuyorican Poets Cafe and The Inspired Word presented by Mike Geffner. I am so blessed to have also been able to perform on The World Famous Apollo Theater Stage as a finalist for Urban Words NYC Teen Poetry Slam. I love the art of performing as well as expressing myself through written word. I never could have imagined years ago that I would be able to do exactly what I love and share it with so many people and now that I know it is possible I never want to stop.

We The People

July 20, 2014

Some of my people steady actin like they weak

Not knowin that our roots run even deeper than those of trees

Dont know what its gon take for us to finally see

We constantly blame the system, yet the system is we

Instead of bannin together we act as if we are asleep

WAKE UP! OPEN YA EYES AND SEE!

We got little ones, steady roamin the streets

Fraid ta pick up a book cuz of what they might see

Bunch of little words they aint able to read

Got little girls with perms in their hair

idolizin the women they see on T.V

They want dat "bone straight hairrrrr" but that aint how our hairs suppose ta be

You see....

Our hairs naturally kinky but in the eyes of society, aint no beauty in dat cuz kinky means unruly

The exact thing they dont want us to be but

You see....

All I want is to be free...

Free to think, free to know that what is, will not always be so like

Martin Luther king (Jr) ~ I have a dream~

Like Maya Angelou ~I know why the caged bird sings~

Like Malcolm X ~Freedom by any means~

WE THE PEOPLE!

So let us STAND UP! LIFT OUR VOICES!

And change the way in which we are seen
