Artificial Love

You are in the desert
And there is nothing you would like more than water
You are crawling, on your hands and knees and the pain is so great that
You are dying
You know that
You will be dead soon
But the dying is worse than being dead, because you have not lost the ability to feel the ache
It is like scraping an empty bowl, the hollow sound of it a stabbing pain in your stomach
Empty, that is the desert.
You come upon a fruit, maybe a pool
This source is blue, so blue you know it is not water
But you are so thirsty, if it fills it will fill you
And you are still dying
But the ache is not so clear nor so persistent
But perhaps, you think, that all the people around you in the desert who are also dying, have found something better, or they have found a way to live with the ache. And occasionally, you feel as if everyone else has a well, a fresh rain cloud and a tap in their homes on the ocean and maybe you are the only one in the desert
So you settle for the blue fruit
And the blue fruit is killing you faster
But is the acheless death preferable to the hollow stomach of living?
