I am inspired by all of my experiences;

I am inspired by politics, music, and stories,

I am inspired by the Earth, the moon, and the stars,

I am inspired by death.

I am inspired by life.

I create my own beauty with words;

I create my own beats and rhythm and spirit,

I create my own flow and tone and rhyme,

I create my own color from black and white and blank space.

I create emotion.

I write for those whose voices have been silenced;

I write for Malcolm and Martin and Medgar,

I write for Tamir and Trayvon and Michael,

I write because my great-great-grandma couldn’t.

I write because I can.
