Shadow of the Moon

December 17, 2013

When I look

Up

Up

Up

And see my friend

Shining silver against the great velvet night,

And feelings ascend

Towards the shimmering light.

I behold the crescent.

It fits in my hand.

Emotions, haunting and pleasant

Cause me to rise and stand.

I look at my feet

Down

Down

Down

As they sink into the earth

Moisture rising with pressure between a toe

Thinking back on days of mirth

And the cycle that brought you low.

As a crescent is stained

Into the whole

Only a shadow remains

Of a portion of the soul.

I tilt my head back

Up

Up

Up

To gaze there once more.

And I only see a familiar faced person

Whose body must be sore

From carrying the burden

Of seeing their outline

As full moon

That could be sublime

But is half-full with a melancholy tune.

And I sit

Down

Down

Down

For this is I, and this is you

Seeing full potential

Or projecting navy blue

Of the sky, forgetting essential

Truths of what brings

The crescent to the full

The Cycle over which us sings

And out of death our bodies pull.
