We are the future now watch us make history

This classroom contains our great nation’s brightest

Using hard science to solve the world’s mysteries

Advancing the world with our achievements highest

I the black kid joking with the only latino

Flirting with our class’s only two ladies

As we study and synthesize these acids amino

In jars of microorganisms that are quite weighty

I ask from my studies of fugacity and distillation

Do we apply the right pressure with the right goals in sight

Boiling aspirations separate society from integration

Are my privileged peers aware of the poor family’s plight

Every generation ignores quandaries vile to the next

The laminar flow of time sees not the eddies much needed

We compare to our ancestors and find ourselves the best

As if history’s great lesson need not be heeded

We are the nation’s brightest and I weep for what’s coming

If we sow new neglect we will reap old trickery

Enjoy our prosperity in ignorance unbecoming

We are the future and we shall repeat history
