If you don't learn to write your own story, someone else will write it for you

Writing is a skill that I believe everyone should cultivate and grow to the best of their abilities. Naturally, some are better than others. But, that's the beauty of writing. For me personally, between balancing wrestling, baseball, orchestra (violin, thanks for asking), and academics, I barely have any time to write. But I can jot down notes or ideas here or there and later turn those thoughts into novels and poems. Poetry is whatever you want it to be, and that is the beauty of it.
