Old Enough to Know Why

April 5, 2015

Like James Dean
Fast and quick
Too young to die
But old enough to know why

A frowning woman
Standing in the kitchen
With her husband's hand around her neck
Are you the hand, or the neck?

A falling bridge
The beams too weak to stand
Cars sinking into the water beneath
I swallow my bitter medicine with little resolve

A cancer victim in a psych ward
If they can't help the body
They can at least help the mind
She sings herself to sleep
A vicious Lovecraftian dream

Trapped in the cellar
With no hand to hold
Bright lights shine before you
You think it's The Light
So tragically you realize
There is no such Light

Me sitting in the far corner
With my hands between my knees
Grasping, clutching, gripping all that lies beneath
My father's absent duly noted
My mother dead for years
Sons and daughters gone now
Husband with mistress

Not much to bet on
No reason to breathe
Like Sylvia Plath
I take my sweet release
