broken bottles

February 21, 2017

happiness is not
at the bottom of a bottle
I don't know why
you continue to search there

who told you
to look here
and why did you
believe them?

happiness is not
purging your sorrows
in a bathtub
on New Year's Eve
while your friend
purges hers
in the toilet

sadness is when
I open the bottle
after I've told you
many times
that I hate the taste

sadness is when
my blurry eyes
still see the darkness
that you told me shots
would light away

sadness is when
I am smiling
I am content
with myself
and I look to you
and you
have opened a bottle
just for yourself
again
