Power Poetry is the world’s first and largest mobile poetry community for youth. It is a one-of-a-kind place where you can be heard. Power Poetry isn’t just about poetry: it's about finding your voice and using it change the world!
Power Poetry launched in 2012 as an outreach project of the documentary film To Be Heard--but it has since taken on a life of its own. Here's just some of the things we do at Power Poetry:
Tip Guides help you learn more about different poetic forms and styles. They're written by youth for youth, with inspiration coming more from Buzzfeed than the American Academy of Poets (sorry!). Some of our most popular tip guides include: 5 Tips on Spoken Word, 6 Tips for Writing an Ode and How to Write a Narrative Poem.
Words have power, and our Action Guides are meant to inspire you to use your words to change your life--and the world! Our staff, interns and partners write and edit our Action Guides. Some of our favorites are 7 Tips for Writing Poetry on Civil Rights and How to Write Poetry About Body Image.
Power Poetry's digital slams are a space for you to have your voice heard about stuff that's going on right now. Most slams focus on current events: #IamJada, #BringBackOurGirls, and the NBA (to name just a few). We also offer around 10 scholarship slams a year; these slams are judged by our staff with cash prizes for the winners!
There are nearly 200,000 poems posted on Power Poetry. Yea, yea, it's super awesome, but it can make finding your favorite poems pretty hard! Luckily, we have some places for you to look: hashtags, themes, search, trends, or even by fate!
Power Poetry has lots of features to keep you busy writing:a leaderboard, an international map of poems posted on Power poetry, and a database of local poetry groups across the U.S. Our CTO, George, LOVES data, so we have a data page too! Think we're missing thing important? Be sure to let us know--we love hearing from our users and fans.
So that's it! We're happy to have you here, and we love feedback. Please send us any questions or comments you may have. Now--what are you waiting for? It's time to start writing!
Power Poetry relies on the generous support of the Bay and Paul Foundations, the Ingalls Foundations, Google, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Learn more about how you can support Power Poetry by reaching out to our staff: firstname.lastname@example.org.
