5 Little Birds

Five baby birds, alone in a nest.

Friends due to birth and location.

Five baby birds, hormones and hatred manifest,

With any contact leaning towards altercation.

Five baby birds, in a nest divided,

with occasional jumps for collusion.

But even when conflicts had nearly subsided,

peace was just an illusion.

Five baby birds, getting sick of each other,

yet somehow getting calmer with age.

All but one, who felt smothered,

as if her small nest was a cage.

Five baby birds, relationships nearing a fracture,

with one secretly trapped, and alone.

She decided to fly, before they could catch her.

And as they watched, they all wished she had flown.

Four grown up birds, never alone in the nest.

Friends due to loss, and salvation.

To honor their kin, who should have been a friend,

while making every good flight, a dedication.
