The Artist
Writes what she feels
And feels what she writes;
Not for herself,
Nor power, nor might.

She does it to make her voice heard
Over the wails and over the crowd.

It’s not like one would listen to a girl
So small and frail
and lost to the world.

‘She’s too young!’ they would say.
‘Too wild, too unkempt.’
Too unkempt? Now what is that supposed to mean?
Does it mean I’m not allowed to have my own voice?
To be listened to?

Why, oh why am I not allowed to live like you?
Is it because I don’t make decisions right?
Did Haley Williams have it right?
If “I can’t make my own decisions or make any with precision. Well maybe you should tie me up so I don’t go where you don’t want me.”

If it is, then you’ll just have to get used to it;
Practice the art of silence;
Because this artist is living her life just the way she wants to.

And there is nothing in my world you can do to stop me.
