A Chance

Since we were born, we are asked one thing,

When you are grown, what will you be?

You meet the Firemen, the Police Officers,

Your Teachers, decide what you like and what you don’t.

You find things that are fun,

Things that would be hard, or easy,

Long term or for just a summer,

And that one thing that is still just a dream.

One that you’ve been told,

“Oh well, that’s not a real job.”

“Well, that’s a nice hobby,”

And of course, “No, you can’t do that.”

One that looks like it could only be obtained by the famous,

The rich,

Or the brilliantly talented,

You work on school, grades, clubs, and activities instead.

That one dream that holds in your mind,

You want to paint,

You want to write,

You want to sing,

You want to dance,

You want to do something greater than your parents,

Something that goes beyond your home town,

Something that isn’t the tradition,

That isn’t always steady,

That isn’t sitting in a cubical and typing,

That isn’t doing the same thing over and over again for the rest of your life.

You want to do something special

So you work.

You must have good grades,

You must have clubs,

Groups that you lead,

Money to spend,

Chances to take,

But then it comes.

It’s time to choose,

Do you go with the tradition?

Or do you aspire for more?

And you’re told, you’ll regret to make one choice,

But also regret the other.

And you make your choice,

Your parents say, well then it’s up to you.

And suddenly you’re on your own

Now money is needed,

You now need a way,

So you see what the regret they were speaking of,

But you push on and find a way to pay,

And almost you’ve gotten there,

Almost you have reached your passion,

You’re almost there and all you need now is to repeat.

Work hard,

Pay attention,

Get good grades,

And take the chances you have to obtain.
