Listen... did you hear that
Yes, what you heard was a crack
The crack of the whip on my ancestors back
or was it the crack of the girls skin as she was just smacked?
Smacked by a loved one, or maybe someone she thinks she loves
But what is love if it comes from a wannabe thug?
A thug for who? Christ? The streets?
Or maybe a thug for his family... don't they have to eat?
Eating for Sustenance or eating because of the pain
Pain that comes from neglect, wondering if anyone knows your name
In the name Jesus, I call myself whole
Fill the cracks and holes, LORD renew my soul
What soul? My life is useless God doesn't love me
Me? I am yours burning for eternity
Eternity? Me burn? No I've been delivered you see
Martin Luther, his Theses and Dr. King He had a Dream
Dreaming on that railroad Miss Tubman once took
Took my ancestors from Hell to Glory covered in soot
Soot from the ashes of crushed dreams and burned carcasses of slaves
Slaves that were lynched, pinched, burned, and betrayed
Betrayed by themselves for not wanting more
More is the evidence of freedom and success,
And I want more, yes me Miss Moore
More tolerance, more peace
More hope, more people who will speak
Speak up for yourself, your race, your beliefs
Belief in your rights and the life that you seek
Seeking hope in a desolate place
Placed in a body so black people they don't ask your name
WHAT IS MY NAME!
IN THE NAME OF JESUS, I call myself whole
Hole? I see a crack I'll slip through that hole
A hole created by those before me who fought for my rights
Right to life, liberty, and happiness and for a future so bright
Bright as a strike of lighting, as loud as a crack of thunder
*Crack*... did you hear that?
That was the sound of my arrival, me taking the world by storm
That crack was the sound of my past fading away... its no more
That sound was the warning of a break through, a new start
That sound was a crack.

The imagery in this poem is amazing! I could really see the struggle of the individuals in the poem, and combined with the sounds such as the "crack," the poem as a whole is very powerful. Have you ever tried writing visual poetry? Learn how and more in the "Resources" section!
