Free Verse Universe

I can't hold sunlight in my hand

But the rays are all I see

Happiness is always in high demand

Yet void of price, totally free

The wind pulls miles of hair from my face

And leaves behind a nest of knots

Birds sing Beethoven's 5th in the trees

Some virtuosos, others off key

The feral cat that roams my street knows

Imperfection is all the rage right now

In this free verse universe

My love is pure and moves the world

Genuine and quietly fierce

Like a cracked rock you'd unfurl

To find an elysian pearl

The darkest of all horses

It comes from a place of passion and sadness

A desolate kite riding the stormy gusts

A calm force pulling through the fickle madness

Love bends, love traverses

A brilliant show in the free verse universe

We do not live each day a cinquain

Lines and syllables without itinerary

Nevertheless we seek out haikus

Unattainable answers to our every inquiry

The world we know as our home

Is a poem without a meter

A writer's dream - a capricious dome

Verse is but a meager fallacy

Words hastily erased from the paper

Reappear to mingle with a lost fantasy

While dancing with rules set in stone

All the while we yell and curse

Desperate crowds are all alone

Though we unite in our free verse universe

"Messing up is all the rage right now." That was the line that started this poem and is the very point. In the time that it was conceptualized and written, a universe could've been born. It must have been rattling around in my head like a ghost rattling chains in the attic for at least 3 months, with no other words. I wanted the form of Free Verse to reflect life itself. No two stanzas have the same amount of lines and perfect rhymes are put on the backburner. Life is imperfect and spontaneous, just like this one. :)
