Grandma was it all worth it?
The constant tears, the shedding of blood, the ongoing battle
Was it all worth it?
The bus rides, the protest, the long marches, the pain
Was it all worth it?
The threats, constant fearing, segregation
Was it triumph or failure that you endured?
Because now were still a generation of segregation
We’re not emancipated, were still yet races
Was the fighting worth it?
Were the long nights of meetings and marches worth what today’s people value?
I can only fathom the suffering and endurance you faced grandma
To only be recognize as someone who sat on a bus
To be proclaimed a “activist” but not given proper fame
To have one month out of twelve that no one respects or honors
Were your swollen feet and the hosing of water worth what my generation values important?
Grandma am I worth the pain and agony that you sustained?
