A Hero In Chromosome 21

Rays of sunshine can be found in your heart,

Spreading to everyone you meet,

Your beauty is a work of art,

Leaving you was bittersweet.

My sister for a year,

You made that house a home,

Leaving you, I shed a tear,

With you, I never felt alone.

Because you had down syndrome,

Many tossed you aside,

But you knew it was just an extra chrome,

So to their expectations, you wouldn’t abide.

You showed me unconditional love,

Oblivious to the hurt in the world,

As pure as the whitest dove,

I began to accept my life as it unfurled.
