I Hope You Know

Dear Girls Who Inform Me They Never Meant to Hurt Me,

I hope you know the things I would do for you.

I hope you know I would achieve the impossible for you,

I would part the waters for you,

build up empires and cast them aside for you,

forgive the monsters and heathens for you.

I hope you know I would provide for you,

I would go sleepless at night for you,

turn my back to the wind for you,

spend eternities in debt for you.

I hope you know I would declare war on the universe for you,

I would keep you warm until I turned cold for you,

struggle under the burden until my bones broke for you,

believe in redemption until my heart failed for you.

I hope you know I would suffer for you,

I would laugh as the whips scourged my back for you

surrender the air in my lungs for you,

begin to love and lose it all for you.

I hope you know I would seek justice for you,

I would shake the gates of Hell for you,

descend into madness for you,

drag the devil screaming from the inferno for you.

I hope you know I would condemn myself for you,

I would let my ancestors disown me for you,

be the worst kind of plague for you,

revel in the symphony of insulting remarks for you.

I hope you know I would lay in the lions’ den for you,

taste the poison in my throat for you,

‘greater love hath no man than this’ for you,

take up the sinner’s cross for you.

I hope you know I would lose myself for you,

I would stare into the western sun for you,

throw myself at the mercy of God for you,

live an eternity of twilights for you.

I hope you know I would find myself for you,

I would dethrone the false kings for you,

become the serpent and dove for you,

speak with complexity of life and love for you.

I hope you know I would let go for you,

I would shake the hand of a rival for you,

subjugate my aching jealousy for you,

let love take its course for you.

I hope you know I would wait for you,

I would shake in bitter silence for you,

close my eyes and breathe deeply for you,

watch the moon grow and die for you.

I would offer up everything I am, for you,

except for my pain,

which no one should ever have to carry,

and my soul,

which belongs to the Father.

But my love for you my dear

will find ends only where ends find themselves.

Sincerely,

Me

We've all been there; we poor out ourselves to a person, offer up everything we are, and we find our offerings denied and ignored, cast down at our feet. This work is my call to those who find me insufficent. I am still here. I still care.
