I Used to Believe

I used to believe that my stuffed animals could come alive,

But now I know it was just my imagination running wild.

I would leave them for school when I was young, but soon return,

To them silently sitting still and slightly seeming stern.

I used to believe that the supermarket sold animal toes,

But now I know my mom made that up to make me behave.

I looked up and down, and all around, but could not find,

The possible rows of toes posing, all of a different kind.

I used to believe that balloons set free would reach Heaven,

But now I know that they could never make it that far.

The pressure and temperature would make them pop,

And send them back down to Earth with a plop.

I used to believe what my parents said was always right,

But now I know there are such concepts as science and statistics.

I utilize a fairytale, a myth, a legend as a learning device,

Instead of mythological, magical, mystical merchandise.

I used to believe that the world was a safe place,

But now I know the actions of hate groups and terrorists.

I witness revulsion against homosexuals, different religions, and blameless civilians,

Yet nothing is being done to aid these people that come in hundreds of millions.

I used to be a very innocent and immature child,

But now I have transformed into a smart, stunning, spectacular senior.

I have learned more material than I could have ever imagined,

While gaining life experiences through kindness and compassion.
