Paper Flowers

Just east of here lay

A girl of late adolescence

In a field of paper flowers

Raindrops cascade here and there

Whence occurring the rain soothes her to sleep

A hushed lullaby murmurs softly through

the meadow which is now her mind

Sometimes a great fire rages

the petals turning to ashes

And she knows not how to dance in the flames

so she succumbs to the pain

the flames gently flick and frolic

around her

nipping at her pale skin

Consuming

Searing

Singing

Her spirit

It smolders her in anguish

Engulfing her very being

And blazed a trail

Of winter fire

That strikes like a match

Her beating heart

That is when she began to embrace it

For the flames glow from within

So the next time it rains she will know how to ignite

And the paper flowers will set fire,

The embers of yesterday scorching the sky
