Success Of My Past
You ask me how i am the person you see
The bright young girl with a future
Then u ask me how my future’s so bright
I’ll tell you the success i’ve seen in my past
The people who paved my way
The ones who opened doors
The ones who made it so opportunities were possible
We all focus on the little bit of history we know
We fail to forget the part of the book taken away from us
When kings and queens ruled the world
I say why not?
Why not make history repeat itself in an good way
To see the beauty and success
Why not flip the script and overcome
I fail to follow the self lynching of our kind
I fail to become involved in the drugs and lost dreams
For my dreams are much bigger
Bigger than the racism that tears us down
Bigger than the black on black violence that breaks communities
I follow the dreams of those who got theres taken away
I'm giving back
Giving back because i'm powerful
Giving back because i can
Yet, again i say why not?
The road of success is clear
Its up to you to take the trip
The world is all up to you
We no longer focus on what came before
Our selfish ways seem to take the best of us
We’re much more than what society portrays
So from now till the day my book closes
My answer on who i am today
Will be told through the ancestors who paved my way
But, still again you ask me who i am
I am the success of my past
The success that freed the slaves
The success that stopped segregation
Yet we still forget
Yet we still walk on those dreams
Those dreams that are now lost
It's time to stand up
Stand up for those who thought they couldn't
Stand up for those who stood up for you
Stand up because we are powerful
We are that new generation everyone talks about
We are the new generation African American Scholars
We are the new generation African American million and billionaires
Never say you can't
Say you can
You can because they could
It's time to build no more destruction
And yet again you ask me how i know
Trust me it's the success of my past
