Thank you Elie Wiesel

The torture you endured was unreal
So much pain, not even time can heal.
Beaten and barely alive,
You managed to survive.
All of the unthinkable acts done to you
You were just a young, innocent Jew.
Yet, you battled through.

I’m sure your father was thankful for what you have done
He must have been proud to call you son.
I know he is gone
Must be hard to move on
But you survived
And luckily, made it out alive.

If it wasn’t for you
So many people couldn’t say they knew
The struggle of living through the holocaust
So many needless lives lost
All because of the star, not a cross.

At the time, not having blond hair and blue eyes
Could’ve lead to your ashes in the skies
The most atrocious act in history
All revealed by your story,
Could’ve remained a mystery.

Your life is now consumed to help others
From one Jew to another
We can all call each other brother
The point of life is to help others
Thank you Elie Wiesel, you potentially saved my mother
You gave so many people the ability to see
Because without you, there might not be me.

I was inspired by the book, Night, to write this poem. I submitted it in hopes of getting a scholarship to pursue my career in college.
