Too Many Goodbyes

Your eyes remind me of the goodbyes of my lost

I look but don't touch even in close proximity

And no matter how close, our breaths haven't crossed.

In lingering summer heat, shivered words were tossed

When we talk, my sentences fall short in sad brevity

Your eyes remind me of the goodbyes of my lost.

We transition from our autumn together to lonely frost

I didn't think you could dig so deep a cavity

And no matter how close, our breaths haven't crossed.

Maybe, though I try so hard to avoid you, we'll inevitably accost

The other doesn't exist in the mind with only words of civility

Your eyes remind me of the goodbyes of my lost.

I think you're bigger than you realize, sputtering out exhaust

It was too draining to be without your complicity

And no matter how close, our breaths haven't crossed.

Please don't look back when you leave. My cheeks are glossed

I'd like you to remember I said goodbye with proud dignity

Your eyes remind me of the goodbyes of my lost

And no matter how close, our breaths haven't crossed.
