We Owe Our Rights To Freedom Writers

Who knew something like a bus,
Water fountain, or bathroom,
Could cause so much distance between two races?

Those were hard times

The hatred, anger
And ignorance was apparent
It had been this way for decades.

African Americans saw no hope

But if you had the chance to change it,
Risk everything in your life
To change the lives of the future,

Would you do it?

That decision was made by the brave,
By the noble,
By the young people in our not so distant past.

Freedom Riders

They faced extreme violence,
No protection,
And even death,

But still came back for more

They didn’t give up,
They couldn’t give up,
They wouldn’t give up.

It was now or never

And they finally won the battle for justice
They brought black people joy, relief
And most of all

Rights

It was a long journey
But their work paid off
And the world is changed

Because of them

Now, us African Americans can
Ride a bus, go to the water fountain,
Go to the bathroom

We have our rights

Our nation has come together
We are now united
And we have many to thank

Especially the Freedom Writers
