Where I'm From

I am from keds, from Gap and overalls. I am from clean sheets in every room (white, smooth, smelling like a fresh picked rose). I am from the Kansas Sunflower whose bright yellow pedals bring happiness to anyone who happens to gaze upon them. I am from decorating Christmas cookies and blondes, from Schaefer and Eakin. I am from the teachers and the farmers, from Be Nice! and Stop that! I am from Wednesday night church group, reciting verses until I could speak them in my sleep. I am from Olathe Medical Center, juicy hamburgers and buttered pasta. From the pace maker put in my grandfather's chest and the finger my dad lost in the milling machine. I am from scrapbooks kept in the cedar chest, only opened every once in a good while. To gaze at the pictures which bring me back to the childhood days, wishing i could fit into those overalls once again.
