How can we learn to hope when we live so caged?
When the ghosts of our past cannot be cast away
Drowning in memories that weigh on like chains
What sort of hope can we chance to regain?
I have looked for the silver linings
Found nothing and was left longing, lost and pining
Behind a wall of what I couldn’t explain.
Waiting for a Sun that might not even rise again.
If we can swim in the rivers of tears that have fallen
And make it past them to the vastness of the ocean
Then why can we not climb a hill
And expect to overcome mountains?
Does our foothold shatter into a million tiny pieces?
In this severance of dust
Did it even really matter or were you just being facetious?

When the individual is not the advocate
For their own advancing evolution
How can they ever hope to find the surest of the solutions?
And you sit here crying, living as that definition
How can you even hope to succeed against the competition?
When you are the horse with the saddest of all backstories
You seek to pursue the faintest of chance and hopeless glory
Hanging on the thread, living on the furthest edge
Of the razor blade of a path that someone like you has no choice but to tread.
When you struggle with the courage to believe you can even make it
Hoping that the one’s who believe aren’t just out there to fake it
How could anyone ever want to bet on a person like me?
What sort of failure can I today aspire to even be?
When who you are chosen to be isn’t cutting it by far
How can you have enough faith to even bet on who you are?

And that’s when life becomes nothing more than simple ignition
When destiny in itself has everything to do with disposition
And less to do with who firmly holds the keys
It’s just a simple equation of who you choose yourself to be.
