Donny Black

Donny Black was a lonely child,

The World laughed at the sound of his name,

Every time people walked past he would smile,

But they would just look past him with shame.

Donny just wanted to be like a normal fellow,

Maybe he’d have friends, if his life wasn’t so vague,

To every passing soul he excitedly exclaimed hello!

But the World always avoided him like he was the plague.

Donny was often the center of everybody’s attention,

His Dreams were often his friends, but Reality scared him,

Instead of teaching him, the teachers often put him in detention,

He was afraid of many things, especially not being able to swim.

Donny wanted to play outside today,

The wind was whirling with laughter from the streams,

His mother told him to stay close, but he began to wander away,

The night sky filled with his mother’s shrilling screams.

Donny Black was a child with Down’s

The sun began to set, turning dark red with every passing hour,

As his mother rocked his limp body, all one hundred and eight pounds.

The next day his mother and father cover his grave, in his favorite blue flowers.

I got goosebumps. As someone who wants to work with special needs children in my future, this moved me.
