The Door Swung Open
No outlet
No freedom
No friends
No voice
Maya said she knew why the caged bird sang
But I was caged and muzzled
Puzzling: why am I so alone?
Bullied and beat up everyday
Wasn't safe for me to run and play
So I stayed hidden in my cage
If only I could stand up for myself
If only I had the tools
Then I wouldn't need to run home
Mom leaving the door open for me running like a fool
I wasn't raised to be the cool kid
Just to be me, but who was I, exactly?
I was young, how could I know?
I just knew that I wanted to sing like Maya's bird
I soon learned how
My pencil took me places that money could not afford
To places where there were no bullies and where I was not ignored
The cage door flew open
And I stepped out on the wings of my faith
I heard that faith moved moutains in children's church
God was right
My pencil moved moutains right out of my way
And gave me a song that no one can ever take
