Forge of Solitude

    The rustic life, pastoral scenes,
    the basis of idyllic dreams
the simple ways of nature come,
    its harmony in total sum.

These country settings, warm and real,
    incredible to smell and feel
rural field to wood and wild,
God’s green Earth and nature’s child.

    Pioneer, explore in wonder,
sunny day or storm and thunder
rivers, streams, dank swamps and ponds—
    the forges of these lifelong bonds;

In thicket I would sit to ponder,
by the pond just over yonder
    watch the teeming life abound
and frogs and flies go round and round.

Frost and Poe, my favored reading,
    Emerson, Thoreau, all pleading
    calling me to solitude,
    in this idyllic interlude.
