The Last Step
One step forward. No objection.
Darkness behind the lids of my eyes,
They cheered at my rejection.
Over and over, I hear their cries.
Amidst the cold voices of hatred I heard
Those of familiarity, of home, of love.
But the din did not preserve their word,
Only of those taunting souls who shove.
I felt the spit, and the laughter anon,
Bereft of joy, all I felt was dread.
But even the hearth’s warmth was gone.
I could taste the relief of silence ahead.
All that was left was that last step.
Taking it, I knew that they’d be pleased
As I would tumble into the great depth
And find that only way to peace.
