Maternal Instincts

Even the way you say my name sounds like an accusation.

I hear your footsteps over the carpet, linolieum, steel, whatever your latest obsession is.

And when my eyes spring open, I can feel the bloodshot strain.

"Pretend to sleep, Pretend to sleep".

I chant along to the frantic tribal beat of my heart.

Your steps dissapate and the tension

I didnt even know I held relinquishes its hold.

My lungs rattle within their cage

As they try to shake the chill of your voice away.

I shrink into myself as I shrink into my duvet,

Praying with naive reverence .

"If i can't see you, you cant hurt me."

You growl again and I scream inwardly,

But all that emits from my mouth is:

" Coming Mom!"
