Not Alone

Dark skinned little girl with roots that won’t straighten Big eyes, full lips and a telling wide nose, So ashamed of all that black, sitting all alone in a corner while The brown skin little girl hair so straight and fine Pointing a finger, from her thin lips come the insults Dark skinned little girl, why you reading all those books? Why you love to write those words, don’t you know your stuff doesn’t rhyme? That’s not the way it’s done, you ain’t SHAKESPEARE! Books, upon books, in a world that’s so mean My words became my refuge, my writings my best friend.
